i'm trying to be more stylish. i've got a long road ahead of me, but i'm hopeful...
for example, i sometimes straighten my hair. i love my curls, but sometimes they just need to be tamed in order to look stylish and sophistamicated (extra syllables always help)
also, my glasses are red or purple. depends on what color i'm wearing.
the other day i bought a long sweater (bargain at jcp for $3). super cute! and ultra cute when worn with skinny jeans (or leggings) and boots that are on the outside of the skinny jeans (or leggings). and i bought a pair of skinny jeans (gasp!) the other day at sears on clearance (cause i'm a bargain shopper) since i'm still not adventurous to wear the leggings i already own...but i did have the boots. two pair, in fact. black and purple. i went with black since the purple boots clashed with the sweater. and with my purple pea coat (also a bargain)...
but i was pretty stoked since i wore not just a stylish outfit today (coat, sweater, jeans, boots) all new and never worn before. altogether cost less than $50. my sister would be so proud...
the random thoughts of a young pastor with a few profound comments thrown in for fun... fyi: quatsch is german for "nonsense" so keep your expectations low ;)

post black friday events
i love black friday shopping.
i remember fondly the early mornings where my sisters (and sometimes their boyfriends) would drive to mitchell in our pjs to get some good deals.
and we've collected a few fond memories. like standing in line for a computer while kayla later sees someone put a computer down later. or being given lists by people who don't want to or are unable to go shopping who want some sweet deals. standing outside waiting for menards to open (this was one of the highlights as you stand in a huge line waiting for the store to open). the crazy lines to check out so we would retreat to a part of the store where no one was in order to simply chill while other customers go crazy waiting in line.
last year was on my own where i went out later and didn't worry about getting up early but went out leisurely in bemidji
but this current year was also a bit different. walmart started their crazy good deals at midnight. technically 12:01. so my sister kayla and i ventured out in omaha (which is way busier than bemidji) at 11:30 and started to find the deals we wanted.
our goal: movies (for me since i like movies) and toys for libby. we had success. oddly enough, most of what we wanted we found in piles people had discarded. most movies were on the cardboard shelves, but a few were not. and most toys i found were just laying around.
people are either crazy mean or nice during black friday shopping. this particular round was nice. we chatted with people in line. and because kayla and i were shopping together, we could tag-team it where one would stay in line but the other would roam around. this came in handy for those all around us in line. like one lady who accidentally picked up blue-ray instead of regular dvd. so i went off and found them for her. then later kayla by chance discovered a barbie doll that another lady was happy to find.
we were back in the apartment by 2 am with most of our black friday purchases. we slept in and ventured out after 9 to menards, borders and target. we didn't buy too much of anything. which is something to be proud of. in fact, we put a lot back in those three stores.
overall, my haul was primarily movies. which i'm excited about. cause i loves me my movie watchin.
the other highlight was kayla getting me hooked on the merlin tv series. it's a funny, witty bbc retelling of the story of merlin and arthur as young men.
but i watched all the episodes she had on hand. so now i've moved on to legend of the seeker.

splurge-onification
i like to make up words. i think that being able to add various endings (and using somewhat correct grammar to do so) shows that i understand my language.
anyhoo, i splurged this past week. my roommate and i have been without a tv that fits our living room.
katie had a small contraption. you know, the dorm-room tv/vcr combo. very effective in small spaces. but we don't have a small space. and when trying to do various activities with the wii, the tv was just a bit too small...
then her fiance brought over his old tv, which was a great size but unfortunately lacked the capacity to hook up either a dvd player or wii to it. antenna or cable tv only. so i'm rejecting it.
i hope that you are beginning to realize that i'm an elitist when it comes to tvs. i do like to share my opinions.
so i went out to peruse and possibly purchase a new tv. actually, i went in search of a computer monitor because they tend to be cheaper than tvs. but alas i was informed that my wii would be unable to hook up to a monitor and also that most monitors don't have built-in speakers. both were key decisions for me to report to the tv sections and scope out the possibilities. so i looked at different sizes and even upped my price range. i had wanted to spend 200 but reluctantly let myself bump it to 250 so that i could get one bigger than 20 inches. cause 20 inches is small for a tv. but the tvs costing 280 were still just out of my price range.
i found one on clearance at target and bought it. granted, had i been willing to spend a bit more, i could have gotten one whose brand i recognized, but i liked this one well enough.
and of course, while perusing in the electronics section of target, i also saw that they had wii play on sale...so i added 45 to my total spending of the day.
which means that for a total of 316 dollars with tax (literally 316, not 316.01) i have a new tv, new wii game and new wii remote.

the pics from the north...aka canada
so i know that i did not post many (or any) pics from my last few days up in bemidji.
i went to winnipeg with my roommie from freshman year at augustana college. we headed north and crossed at baudette, drove through ontario around the lake of the woods before heading west to manitoba and winnipeg. very scenic indeed.
once in winnipeg, we had a great experience of showing up at the hostel we wanted only to find out that they were overbooked. but the owner was really nice and even gave us 30 bucks (yup, canadians refer to their dollars as bucks just like in the usa) for our hassle before directing us to the other hostel in town.
so we arrived there, got two beds in a dorm room (oh, how i love bunk beds). no one else showed up to fill the other 4 beds, so we basically had a private room.
we walked outside a bit before ducking into a store called warehouse one (or something like that), where i found a pair of sunglasses on clearance for 2.50. which in us dollars would be roughly 2.40. good deal. and super cute.
since it was downpouring out, we ventured up into the skywalk. i guess winnipeg, with its cold winters, decided to build a skywalk that connects several buildings, two of which are malls. so we had fun shopping around and buying souvenirs.
we also made it to forks market, a really cute mall that sits along the muddy Red River (the same river that likes to flood fargo/morehead and grand forks).
we went back to the hostel, where i did some work. no rest for those who were not really on vacation. mariko went out and meandered (even got a bit lost) through downtown.
the next morning, we rose and went to find a statue of winnie the pooh. since winnie was named after winnipeg...but no real luck. the sculptor had some cool statues in the sculpture garden.

ugh
it's amazing how one syllable can sum up your entire mood.
and "ugh" fits me to a t right now.
allow me to elaborate a bit. this week just never seems to end. it's flown by because i've been so busy, but right now i'm so drained...
i finished monday with over two hours of cleaning. that's right. i cleaned with an arm that had a swollen bug bit approximately the size of my hand...i have a picture to prove it. and if i remember, i'll even post it to gross people out. won't be today, but i may go back and add or edit in the next couple days.
i'm on antibiotics...boo...first prescription in my life. seriously. mom couldn't think of any. other than glasses or contacts, and those really don't count. so now, in addition to a crazy schedule, i have to remember to take a pill three times a day. easier said than done.
my tuesday was uber long. i got to the church at 8:45 am. which is pretty good for me since i don't have anything going on until 10:30, which is when the pastor's text study starts. was with them until noon, when i quickly grabbed lunch, talked to my sister kayla, and finalized prep for a bible study at 1:30. did that, ate a snack with them, then retreated back to my batcave, aka my desk. where i proceeded to finalize (which really meant neatly rewriting out my notes) the bible study for wednesday morning. since i was going to be gone for it. then chatted with someone a bit when i was walking out of the church. and left at 6:30 pm. which is a long time to be in a church building without stepping outside once. went home and packed for my overnight trip to come.
got up wednesday morning, picked up a parishioner, and drove to rochester, mn. which is a good 5.5 hrs away in good traffic. which we did not have. for those of you who don't know, there is about an 8-10 mile stretch on east-bound I-94 into the twin cities that is basically stop and go traffic. not fun. but we made it to the hotel and hopped on a shuttle to go to mayo (i'm healthy but she needed to consult with a surgeon there). so now i can say that i've been to mayo. we ate at famous dave's where they serve way too much food. then i watched some tv before crawling into bed. only to wake up 1.5 hrs later when i got a text message from my baby sister...before crawling back under the covers.
alarm went off at 5:15. i slept until 5:50 (i wasn't going anywhere...) when i woke up again to say a quick bye to the church member (we shared a room) and run out into the rain to get something out of my car. back to bed. woke up, packed my bags, watched some tv waiting for the phone call to pick her up at the clinic. and started the drive back.
highlight today: ikea!
she had never been, so we stopped by for the experience. i ate some food and bought some things. it was glorious. then we got back in the car and drove the 4 hrs to bemidji.
and now i'm sitting in the batcave waiting for a meeting to start. i need to be at a meeting at 7, but i'm so tired and feel as though i'm going to fall asleep before it's over.
i'm even too tired to get really worked up after reading my internship committee's evaluation of me.
but i can sum it up: i'm too immature, casual and inexperienced to be a parish pastor. oh, and my sermons lack depth (which they define as real-life illustrations) and have not been prepared well enough in advance, and i must admit that they are thinking of my past habits when i started sermon prep on fridays, but the last four months i could generally tell them what my sermon was about on tuesdays...i guess finally learning some discretion about work habits bit me in the behind. again. oh, and another bonus in my committee having the guts to bring up the fact that where i stand in relation to the elca's decision on homosexuality causes them concern.

but i do have enough fight in me to make one comment: big shocker that you think the 25-year-old is young, casual and lacks experience right now to be an effective parish pastor. even bigger shocker is knowing that my pastoral style would be a great fit for a younger congregation. at least in comparison to them. since most of the congregation, and my committee in particular, are old enough to be grandparents or great-grandparents (seriously, all five are older than my parents, who are already grandparents) and having pastors that have all been on the other side of 30...generally much father down the road on the other side of 30...and as far as my stance in the elca, i would like to point out that this congregation has half the members it did a year ago, and all those who left/are leaving stand exactly where i am. way to kick them (and me) out the door.
oh, and did i happen to mention that my congregation is a known clergy-killer? as in, they drive off their clergy every 5-7 years...and this is the current pastor's 7th year...
so that's my week. and i have to somehow have enough energy to finalize a sermon for sunday in this emotional state...

george
i named the new hammer i bought today. george is a small "stubby" hammer.
i kid you not, that's the type of hammer it is. seriously. it says so on the label.
i bought a stubby hammer.
feel free to giggle. i did. and still do.
anyhoo, george was purchased in preparation for a mission trip where i will be painting houses. which means that my shopping list also includes paint brushes, paint scraper (and i totally found a rockin awesome 14-in-1 paint tool), goggles, etc. the hammer is prolly meant to pound in random nails gone astray. i don't expect george will get much action, but he was well worth the $2 i spent on him at home depot. it was a fun day!

splurge part 2 (revised)
i know that i shouldn't, but i just couldn't seem to resist...i went shopping again.
and dropped a lot of money in one day.
well, two days...make that three...
day #1 was thursday afternoon here in bemidji. ventured to fashion bug, where i proceeded to purchase 10 new items. and got some amazing deals. like a new dress jacket, skirt, some dress slacks, shirts, shrug for less than $100. which is pretty amazing considering jackets/blazers can cost that much (or more) in some stores. cause i'm deciding to play along with the expected dress code. at least a little bit.
day #2 was friday. all day friday. as in, megan and i left my house in bemidji a little before 9 am and didn't get back til around midnight.
stop #1 was the outlet mall in albertville.
- dress barn: white summer jacket. first piece of clothing in YEARS where i paid full price. as in, no coupons or sale or clearance or deals of any kind...
- kitchen stores (two of 'em): cookie sheet, round cake pan, cake pan with carrying lid, mortar and pestle (so i can ground up spices...)
- clarks: new pair of super comfortable purple shoes. cause everyone should own purple shoes...
- eddie bauer: down vest (cause i love puffy vests so much that this was the third i've bought this year) and a world travel clock/flashlight/thermometer. yup, it will not only light up the darkness and tell me the time and wake me up, but it will also let me know how hot/cold it is. cause i need my purchases to be able to multi-task just like me
- old navy: pair of jeans for $14. the exact same size/style that i was wearing on my shopping trip
stop #2 was nordstrom rack in maple grove, where bought another super cute jacket for a mere $13 and a cute cami
stop #3 was pf changs, a chinese restaurant with a gluten-free menu. was a really good restaurant. and now i have leftovers. lots of them. cause what i ordered was a ridiculous amount of noodles, chicken and veggies.
stop #4 (and final stop) was ikea. where i bought a drying rack for dishes, a rack to store and display wine/juice bottles, cheap and lightweight comforter, straws, garlic press, sparkling juice, soup ladle. and megan bought me a housewarming gift in the form of a large pot. cause i only had small ones that work for one person but not even two.
day #3 was back in bemidji.
this afternoon i received a package in the mail. my sister had found and sent me some birkenstock sandals. i have to pay her back, but i also had to venture out so that i could exchange them for the right size. fortunately, the famous footwear here had the right size in stock. i called and they said they did. so megan and i traipsed over to the mall.
and after the shoe store, we walked across the hallway in the mall to joann fabrics. where i bought a welcome sign on clearance. of course, it was originally for st patty's day, but i have no problem with replacing the ginormous xmas wreath with a small green sign that says welcome and has three shamrocks hanging down. cause i figure it will work until i leave.
then we ventured to coldstone for our supper. and it was delicious. i like berries. and ice cream.
then we went to target to peruse the clearances and to pick up some trouser socks for me. cause the ones i have keep petering out on me. and it's not warm enough to pull out the no-show liners yet. while perusing, i found a cute black dress on the clearance rack. so i bought it.
then go to a concert. three show choirs from the middle and high schools here in bemidji. and an a capella group known as marcoux corner. and they were fantastic. i would recommend everyone to check them out and see them in concert if they can. cause they were that fantastic.
now it's late and i should think about going to bed.
at least i dont preach tomorrow.

groceries and more...
yesterday and today i ventured out to various stores.
yesterday in particular i did grocery-store-hopping.
this very challenging activity involves visiting three different local grocery stores plus superwalmart (and i did venture into the grocery portion) with a layover at target (not a supertarget so therefore it is not a grocery store) and a final pitstop at a liquor store.
bought a lot of food. primarily fruits and dairy products. and frozen pizza. and veggies.
and some beer and self-rising flour so that i could make beer bread. which was pretty tasty.
today i went specifically to herbergers for their community day. and bought a new necklace and some wall decor (cause it is too fancy to call a wall hanging) to spruce up a very blank wall.
now if only i could get the stupid thing to hang straight...

tubing and music
today was the first sunday in lent. which meant that right before one of our services, i get called upon to quickly switch our powerpoint and worship order to replace the "alleluia" with the lenten verse.
then after church, for which i looked awesome, i ran back home. ate food and got dressed all in black for my band concert.
concert went well.
then went shopping briefly. herbergers where i bought a new pair of glove/mittens. you know, the ones that are gloves with fingertips cut off and the option of folding over the rest for it to be transformed into a mitten.
of course, i picked the print fits most with the hat i purchased a while back.
and while there, i picked out (but am waiting until saturday to purchase) some really neat wall hangings/pictures.
then i went back home to change and back some apple crisp for the highlight of the day: potluck followed by tubing at the local ski area, buena vista.
and had an amazing time.
when i got there, britta said that we were going to be tubing buddies and that she was going to show me the ropes since i had never gone tubing before.
and i was in a great mood. everyone was so jovial and having fun.
tubing was basically like going down a waterslide on an innertube, which i have done several times.
only colder. at night. outdoors. in february.
but i wore my new boots that kept my feet warm as my face froze. i swear i got windburn from sliding so fast and having ice spray coming at me.
some of the trips down were solo. some of the routes were smooth. others ridiculously bumpy.
other trips were as a group of two, three, four, 12, or 18...in other words, it varied.
some highlights:
- duo with bri. way fast and dizzying. the guy helping to steady the tubes decided to push us and help us spin. so we screamed and got a bit dizzy.
- a solo on the track meant for groups. of course, i was told to tuck my legs in, which meant i could spin faster. and had to wait a few seconds at the bottom to let the world straighten out.
- duo with britta. her last ride of the night and we flew down the slope.
- racing the boys. and i always won. even if they took a running start and i barely got pushed off.
- joking with the workers. the guys were nice and seemed to enjoy bantering with people.
- finding out that my crisp was all eaten up when i went to retrieve my pan
but now that the fun is over, i'm sore and going to be in pain tomorrow.
but it was so worth it

splurge
i admit that i did not have such a good week. at least, i can honestly say that i've had better weeks. cause this was one of the more depressing and i struggled to function due to both rational and irrational anger, frustration and extreme dislike (cause i refuse to hate)...
to put it bluntly, i was not in a very good mood (due to many and various reasons too numerous to count...)
but fortunately, God has blessed me with some amazing friends and family that were willing to listen to me rant and rave and purge myself of most of my horrid emotions
that and some intentional time with bible in hand and a lot of praying
yesterday morning i took off for a quick trip to st paul.
cause i really had to get out of bemidji.
i think that this is partly due to the fact that the entire town of bemidji has become the bubble i live and breathe in. much like how the campus at both augustana college and luther seminary became bubbles from which i had to regularly escape, whether to go shopping or eat out or go to a movie or whatever
the other part was that i needed to be around peers.
peers who i do not feel are constantly watching me, judging my abilities, and being overly observant over what i wear or how i act.
and it was fantastic.
en route, i stopped by an outlet mall and perused a few stores in search of clothing since i guess my wardrobe needs some revamping.
at least according to some in my congregation. and because i don't want to offend or fight over my right to wear clothes that the rest of my generation wears (because i'm a pastor now), i bought several new sweaters and shirts.
i was bitter about that for quite some time, but God is giving me a second chance to approach this slight change with grace and a better attitude.
for example, i love to shop. so i went shopping. i like having new clothes and not always wearing the same old things in my closet, so i went shopping. so i'm currently on a shopper's high
exciting highlights of my shopping spree:
- 6 sweaters
- 2 long-sleeve shirts
- 2 tees
- new skirt
- two new tables at ikea (matching side table and coffee table)
- new wine stopper
- 12 bottles of wine (now i just need to have a party so i can drink it...)
- heart-shaped cake pan
- frying pan
- small glass candle plates (you know what i mean, the simple ones to put pillar candles on)
- clothes for my niece who just doesn't stop growing
and of course, my trip to the twin cities was not just about the shopping.
it was really all about my friends.
cause i missed them and wanted to see them.
so i met up with mandi b (who went to ikea and the mall of america with me), katie e (who let me crash at her place, fed me pizza and banana pancakes and took me to trader joe's where i bought a lot of wine), and michelle (who hosted a movie night at her apartment where i also saw rachel, a friend from my camp days). as well as meeting a few new people.
so great to be able to share our stories and experiences since we have not seen each other since last summer (katie, mandi), last semester (michelle) or for a couple years (rachel).
i have missed not having friends right next door. four hours is not really all that far, but is still too far to see each other that often.
and today i left st paul for another adventure en route to bemidji.
i stopped by cabela's where i bought some new boots. cause i hear that bemidji gets snow (nothing like stating the obvious as there is some on the ground and its only february and there can easily be snow in april since i live so far north in the tundra). and before someone lets me know that i should have bought snowboots last october, i did have some boots. i just bought some new ones. awesome ones that are supposed to keep my feet warm in -32 degrees fahrenheit.
then i met up in baxter (which can easily be confused with its neighbor brainerd since they are essentially one town) with josh, a friend from my freshman year of college and the last two years at sem. who is on internship only 2 hours away yet we have not met up all that often due to our busy schedules. we chatted as we went shopping. and found some success in ice scrapers on clearance. cause we both know that winter is not over.
so as i get ready to sign off for the evening, i am finally at peace. God is amazing and is definitely guiding me into some tough situations that will make me stronger. i just am scared of what will come if i struggled to handle this one
i hope that i will be able to update about how the band concert and the tubing (which will be a first time for me) go tomorrow
to put it bluntly, i was not in a very good mood (due to many and various reasons too numerous to count...)
but fortunately, God has blessed me with some amazing friends and family that were willing to listen to me rant and rave and purge myself of most of my horrid emotions
that and some intentional time with bible in hand and a lot of praying
yesterday morning i took off for a quick trip to st paul.
cause i really had to get out of bemidji.
i think that this is partly due to the fact that the entire town of bemidji has become the bubble i live and breathe in. much like how the campus at both augustana college and luther seminary became bubbles from which i had to regularly escape, whether to go shopping or eat out or go to a movie or whatever
the other part was that i needed to be around peers.
peers who i do not feel are constantly watching me, judging my abilities, and being overly observant over what i wear or how i act.
and it was fantastic.
en route, i stopped by an outlet mall and perused a few stores in search of clothing since i guess my wardrobe needs some revamping.

fit-estestest
I succumbed to temptation.
I bought a Wii and the Wii Fit Plus.
And I'm loving it.
Some days I have been far more active than others.
But today I decided to skip the extra activities like yoga or skiing or hula hoops or running or marching or boxing...and instead just did the short little bit so that I can keep up my progress of at least checking in once a day.
Everyone needs a Sabbath, after all.
But I have been dedicated thus far and have at least done the Body Test where the wee little Wii tells me that I have a Fit age based upon my balance (mind and body) and my actual age of 25. So far I have done quite well with home scores under my age. Youngest: 20. Oldest: 26.
I broke down and spent the money for a great new toy.

I'm impressive.

cuttin time
I ordered a full set of knives the other day from Pampered Chef. It cost a pretty penny, but they better be high quality and last my entire life. Of course, all the knives came in their own special individual boxes. Which means a lot of unwrapping for me. But it will be worth it since I like to cook.
Now the only regret I have is that I could have bought a Wii for the same price...
